PRESS RELEASE January 31, 2023

News Games’ popular News Quiz product has delivered on its promise to help news organizations engage with their audience in a new and fun way.

HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE — News Games today announced that its News Quiz product surpassed 1 million responses within one year after being launched. The milestone follows strong adoption of News Games’ platform by local news organizations across the United States.

Opportunity for NPR affiliates and other non-profit news organizations

Several NPR affiliates have led the way in providing local news quizzes in their respective markets, including NPR’s Boston affiliate, WBUR, who was the first to do so. NPR affiliates and other local non-profit news organizations alike report that their news quiz offerings have become one of their most successful forms of audience engagement, with some referring to it as “engagement gold”.

Email engagement

News Quiz customers report very high click-through rates (CTRs) when the quiz is promoted in their daily newsletter, with some customers reporting that news quiz links are consistently some of the top performers.

News Quiz customers have also been building news quiz alert subscriber lists and report that CTRs of these lists have the highest of any of their email products.

Striking a chord, staying relevant in a digital world

Word puzzles and games have paired well with the news for over 100 years, and digital news games have become core parts of many national news organizations’ online initiatives, including at
The New York Times. Consumers love news quizzes because they provide a quick and fun way to catch up with the news and test their knowledge.

As consumers are increasingly consuming news information digitally, news quizzes provide an opportunity for news organizations to provide their audience with new value while fitting perfectly into their organization’s digital strategy. As recently cited by the
Nieman Lab, an organization at Harvard University dedicated to helping journalism navigate its future in an Internet age, Liz Maynes-Aminzade, the puzzles and games editor at The New Yorker, said “more and more media companies do seem to be catching onto the idea that games can help support their publications as a whole. I don’t see the current interest in games as a bubble.”
